ViaPlus has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of its first multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) electronic toll system in India, located in Daulatpura on the Delhi–Jaipur Expressway. Among the first toll plazas in the country to transition to barrier-free operations, the inauguration supports India’s shift from traditional gated toll lanes to multi-lane free-flow tolling.
Located on one of India’s most strategic corridors, the six-lane expressway connects New Delhi with the state of Rajasthan and carries heavy volumes of both daily commuters and long-distance traffic. The move to free-flow tolling represents a meaningful upgrade to the travel experience, reducing congestion and improving journey times for the 10 million vehicles using the highway each year.
Fast-track delivery
Delivered in partnership with Airtel Payments Bank for Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) - a joint venture led by NHAI - the Daulatpura system advances India’s national program to deploy multi-lane free-flow tolling at scale.
As the system integrator, ViaPlus led the end-to-end delivery of the Daulatpura project in just five months. The site features a new lane system, overhead vehicle detection and classification sensors, and ViaPlus’ advanced Alpha® back-office platform and AI-based Sightline® image review technology to process license plate transactions. Surveying, design, construction, and integration were carried out in parallel to accelerate delivery.
The rapid implementation highlights ViaPlus’ technical expertise and strong local collaboration. With over a decade of experience in India since 2012, ViaPlus currently processes 40% of the country’s electronic toll collection transactions and brings deep operational insight to one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing tolling ecosystems.
AI-powered tolling for high-volume traffic conditions
Daulatpura's barrier-free toll system operates a multi-lane free-flow model, allowing vehicles in all lanes pass below the toll gantry without stopping. Vehicles are identified by their onboard FASTag – India’s electronic toll collection system – or by license plate recognition. As each vehicle passes the toll point, the system automatically identifies and classifies it, validates the transaction, and processes the toll.
ViaPlus Sightline® uses advanced image-review technology to manage transactions for vehicles without FASTag. It uses AI tools to improve license plate images – such as in conditions of heavy traffic or low plate clarity – so more transactions can be validated automatically and processed faster. Along with overhead sensors to detect and classify vehicles, the system enables a seamless and fully automated process that supports fast and reliable free-flow tolling in high-volume traffic conditions.
Supporting India’s national move to smarter highways
India is rapidly moving towards a smarter and more technology-driven national highway tolling ecosystem . The MLFF model is part of a broader transition aimed at making journeys faster, more seamless and more efficient across the national network. The momentum is accelerating, with India now preparing larger-scale deployments covering multiple toll plazas across key highway corridors.
In this context, the opening of Daulatpura is both an operational and technological milestone for ViaPlus and proof of its ability to support large-scale digital transformation in road mobility.
