Pharr International Bridge Expands Partnership with ViaPlus to Upgrade Cross-Border Tolling System

ViaPlus, a subsidiary of VINCI Highways, has been selected by the Pharr International Bridge to provide an expanded electronic tolling system (ETC) for its cross-border operations. The enhanced and customer-focused technical solution will build upon the existing ViaPlus system to further improve the bridge’s operational efficiency and support its long-term growth objectives.
Pharr International Bridge (Pharr) is a critical commercial gateway between the United States and Mexico, spanning the Rio Grande River and handling six thousand vehicle crossings daily, including a high volume of commercial trucks. As one of the busiest land ports on the Texas-Mexico border, the bridge facilitates a USD $46.4 billion trade volume and plays a vital role in regional economic growth. Current development plans include the completion of a twin bridge span to increase capacity by 100% by January 2026.
ViaPlus will deploy advanced tolling technology and upgrade the toll lane system with new features designed to support Pharr’s long-term operational objectives. Built upon the ViaPlus Alpha® commercial back office for high-volume transaction management, the new technology will deliver upgraded payment processing, enhanced reporting features, new customer benefit workflows, and retain the interoperability that currently enables electronic toll collection for vehicles registered in either Mexico or the United States. ViaPlus will also introduce a new mobile application and WhatsApp functionality for customer-centric account management. The upgraded roadside system will include integrated automated hazmat detection, doubled capacity for ETC lanes, and new equipment with added functionalities. Collectively, these features will optimize Pharr’s ability to serve its customers and expand its operational performance to accommodate future growth. The new contract includes ten years of operations and maintenance.
